Your furnace uses two things to keep itself running: electricity and natural gas. Natural gas is pumped through an underground pipe into your furnace.
The gas is burned on the inside to warm up the “heat exchanger”. The heat exchanger sends its fumes to a flue vent to avoid sending toxic gases into your home, which is obviously a safety hazard. The fan underneath the heat exchanger then blows the heat around your home to distribute the heat evenly. The furnace will run until your thermostat registers an even distribution of heat through your home at the desired temperature.
Along with this, modern furnaces have this fun tool called a “draft inducer” to ensure the emissions caused by burning natural gas is not released into your home. Forcing the emissions out creates a draft, which increases the efficiency of the heat exchanger and the fan since they are able to blow heat alone instead of emissions too.
