When it comes time to renovate your renovate your bathroom it’s go big or go home. More than four out of five homeowners who decided to renovate are replacing the flooring, counters, showers, and sinks. A fresh start for a fresher bathroom. If you find yourself in this situation, but don’t know where to start, read on.
Flooring
There really are only two choices when it comes to bathroom flooring. Carpets will get wet, hardwood will get warped, and laminate isn’t fully waterproof. That leaves tile and vinyl. The age-old battle between vinyl and tile has raged on relentlessly for many years. Here are the cliff notes:
- Vinyl
This flooring material can be inexpensive, and might sometimes reflect its price. There are many color and pattern options. It is almost foolproof in its water resistance, but if installed improperly it could bubble up underneath. - Tile
Tile is completely waterproof. It is more expensive but much higher quality. There are many different patterns you can do with tile. The drawback is that it can be quite cold on your feet. That said, you can ask your contractor about heated underlayment for tile floors.
It is all down to preference. Tile is more aesthetic and fully waterproof while vinyl is less expensive and warmer on your feet.
Sink and Countertops
Again, for countertops you are left with a dichotomous decision; granite or quartz?
- Granite
Granite countertops are all natural slabs that need to be sealed. They have beautiful unique markings throughout and are incredibly durable. Granite is prone to staining, however, and must be sealed occasionally to prevent damage. - Quartz
Although also found in nature, quartz countertops are processed fairly heavily, making many of them look exactly the same. On the other hand, they are easier to clean, don’t require sealing, and cost roughly the same, if not cheaper.
Whichever countertops you end up choosing for your bathroom fixtures, make sure you’ve weighed the options based on your own preferences as both are fantastic countertop materials.
